THE PIED PIPER (
Robert Browning)
ACT ONE: IN THE VILLAGE MAIN STREET
Stage props as available represent a village street (eg. a signpost to butchers/bakers, post box, backdrop, etc) Lighting, if available, indicates a sunny day. The Introduction to A HAPPY TOWN begins, and the Children of the Village enter, playing. They take up positions around the stage to sing the song. As they sing, the Mayor and a few Villagers enter, deep in conversation.
NARRATOR 1:
Hamelin was a happy place. It was summer, and the boys and girls of the village were playing in the street. But not quite
all
of them... BEN: Where's Peter? (The others shake their heads) RUTH: (Pointing stage left) He's flying his kite.
NARRATOR 1
: The Children continued to play in the bright morning sun. But suddenly, Peter and John came rushing down the high street. Peter and John enter from stage left. Peter carries a kite.
NARRATOR 1
: Peter had some bad news - rats were coming down the lane towards Hamelin! PETER: Rats! Hundreds of rats!
NARRATOR 1
: . No-one had ever heard of such a thing. The mayor decided that he was in charge MAYOR: Don't worry, Villagers. We'll hide all the food away. VILLAGER 1: Won't the Rats smell food? MAYOR: No, no. Come along now.
NARRATOR 1
: They decided to give it a try. Quickly the Children of the Village went indoors to help their parents hide the food.
NARRATOR 1
: But very soon unwelcome visitors arrived in town. Dance of the rats The King Rat: As the dance ends, King Rat holds up his paw for attention, sniffs the air, then indicates for the Rats to follow him as he exits stage right. As they leave, enter Peter and John from stage left. PETER: (Indicating) Look! There's one! JOHN: And another! PETER: I said this wouldn't work.
NARRATOR 2
: The Rats were soon all over the Village. The Mayor's trick had failed. Enter Mayor pursued by Villagers from stage right.
NARRATOR 2
: The Villagers were angry. VILLAGER 3: What can we do? The Rats are eating all our food.
NARRATOR 2:
But just at that moment, a strange and colourful figure arrived in the village of Hamelin. It was the Pied Piper. PIED PIPER: I can save Hamelin and help you to get rid of the Rats. MAYOR: Ho, ho, ho. What can you do that we have not done yet? PIED PIPER: I shall play my magic flute. The Rats will follow me. MAYOR: It’s no use, The Rats will never follow you! PIED PIPER: We shall see. By the morning your Rats will be gone. And then you’ll have to pay a thousand guilders?
NARRATOR 1
:The Pied Piper bowed and left. But some of the Villagers were worried. VILLAGER 1 Oh dear. VILLAGER 2: Oh dear, oh dear.
NARRATOR 1
:What if he
did
take the rats away? Where would the Mayor get a thousand guilders? MAYOR: Don't worry. It will never work. They leave, with calls of 'Goodnight'. Lighting dims. Stage empty. A solitary Rat enters stage right, sniffs the air, then exits stage left. Very quietly, the Introduction to FOLLOW ME begins. The Pied Piper enters from stage left and plays the flute walking around the stage as the Rats, led by King Rat, form a single file line behind him. During V4 they file off stage left, led by the Piper. Immediately lights go up. Peter, John and Ruth enter from stage right, followed by the Villagers who carry loaves of bread, etc, and the Mayor.
NARRATOR 1
:It was morning, and all the Rats had left Hamelin. There was food in the larder once again. JOHN: Now we can eat our food ourselves. RUTH: Yes, we can have some breakfast at last! MAYOR: Well, there you are Villagers. A good idea of mine, don't you think? MAYOR: This calls for a celebration. Music..dancing... Song “ WHAT A FUSS!” .Suddenly the Mayor, who was conducting the Villagers, stops and turns. Silence.
NARRATOR 2
:Suddenly the Pied Piper was back. The Rats had gone and he wanted his money. PIED PIPER: Hello, Mr. Mayor. Celebrating, I see. Can I have my money now? MAYOR: I do not
have
a thousand guilders. PIED PIPER: You are a rich man. You must have a thousand guilders.
NARRATOR 2
:But the Mayor only shook his head. He would not part with his money. The Pied Piper: OK. But mind if you don’t find the promised money until midnight my pipe will play again. VILLAGERS: What can he mean? VILLAGER 1: You
did
agree to pay him the money, Mr. Mayor. VILLAGER 2: He
saved
Hamelin
from
the Rats. MAYOR: He's only a Piper. What can he do? VILLAGER 3: He
is
just a Piper, and a thousand guilders is a lot to pay. MAYOR: Well, now. Let us dance again, and forget the Pied Piper. WHAT A FUSS! continues. Mid-song the remaining Children dance on and dance round with Peter, John and Ruth as the Villagers watch. As the song ends, all dance off as lights dim once more.
NARRATOR 1:
Night fell once more on Hamelin. Everyone was home in bed. Everyone except the colourful stranger. He came back to Hamelin that very night... FOLLOWME Introduction begins, and is played repeatedly as enter the Pied Piper stage left, not yet playing. He moves to stage centre and stands (or sits on a milestone). He looks at his watch.
NARRATOR 1
:The Pied Piper. What could he want? Ah yes, it was nearly midnight, but no sign of the mayor or his promised gold. The Pied Piper has a surprise in store for him. A triangle chimes twelve. The Pied Piper begins to play the flute. This time, Children in nightdresses enter, including Peter and John, arms outstretched as if sleepwalking. They stand and sing, then move round in a file behind him as he leads them off stage left. As the last child disappears, the song ends, and Ruth enters the stage with her arms outstretched, but obviously well behind the others. She moves across to stage centre as last notes sound, hesitates, stops, then sits down slowly, curls up and goes to sleep. Pause. Lights come up. Mayor and Villagers enter in a hurry.
NARRATOR 2
: As dawn broke, the Villagers came down the high street in a hurry. VILLAGER 1: The Children, where are all the Children? VILLAGER 2: Oh dear, oh dear. VILLAGER 3: Gone, gone. There's not a single child left in the village.
NARRATOR 2:
Yes, all the Children had gone with Pied Piper. Or almost all... VILLAGER 3: (Seeing Ruth asleep) Ruth! Ruth, wake up.
NARRATOR 2
: But where were all the others? RUTH: Gone...with the Piper. Beautiful music I was too slow. VILLAGER 2: Gone? Gone where? Which direction? RUTH: I don't know. I think that way. (Indicates off stage left) VILLAGER 1: To the mountains! Surely not there?
NARRATOR 2
: They must follow quickly. VILLAGERS: We must get after them. (To Mayor) You, get the gold! MAYOR: But...but...but... VILLAGERS: (Closing in) Get the gold.
NARRATOR 2
: The Mayor came back with a sack of gold. But…. now the villagers had to hurry. VILLAGER 3: Quick. There's no time to lose. Lead the way, Ruth! They all leave the stage, pushing a reluctant Mayor along.
ACT TWO: ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE
The Pied Piper puts the flute to his lips, but the Villagers enter noisily and interrupt him. VILLAGER 1: Stop, Mr. Piper. Do not play your magic tune. VILLAGER 2: We are sorry, Mr. Piper. Please forgive us.
NARRATOR 1:
And the Mayor had brought the money. The Villagers push the Mayor forward . MAYOR: I have brought your money, Mr. Piper. I'm sorry. (Holds up sack of gold) CHILDREN: Hooray! PIED PIPER: Let that be a lesson to all of you.
NARRATOR 1:
Everyone should keep their promises. VILLAGER 3: We will remember, Mr. Piper. Thank you. VILLAGER 1: Come children, Hamelin can be a happy place once more. They sing A HAPPY TOWN , as the Children re-unite with the Villagers, and the Mayor counts the Piper's fee out of his sack.
