Selecting Listening Materials.
I like additional materials from multimedia resources. I’d like to tell
you about Macmillan Young learners Children’ s Readers. Level 5 .
It is a free multimedia site and this year before Thanksgiving Day I gave
my students a listening text «Pumpkin. A Pie for Miss Potter». The story
lasts about 9 minutes. The speed of the speech is rather low. A pleasant
voice told us interesting facts about pumpkins, their planting and at the
end there was given a recipe of a pumpkin pie. The text had a success in
some different reasons.
Firstly, it was listening for gist ( for global understanding). It was rather
useful as cultural information. With a carefully selected listening
activity, you also have the opportunity to teach students about a special
holiday or tradition that is popular with another culture. The purpose is
to expose the class to this cultural aspect through a listening activity.
Listening Exercise:
audio track that speaks about a popular American holiday like Thanksgiving. Have students listen and answer some comprehension questions. Then ask: Is this holiday celebrated in their country of origin? If not, is there a festivity that is similar in their country? The purpose of this type of listening is to train students to grasp the main points or general information presented in the audio. Students often get stuck on a detail, a word or phrase they don’t understand and fail to see the bigger picture. So, this is a great exercise for this type of student. express the main point in a concise manner.
Listening for Detail
Here, the purpose is to train students to grasp specific information, details that are relevant, important or necessary. The goal is to help students obtain the detailed information they may need like hours, dates, names, etc…
Listening Exercise
, The text had a real original recipe of a pumpkin pie. The students wrote it carefully and were very interested in it The next lesson I was really surprised as they baked a pie they’d listened about. It was an unusual post task activity-project work and I was very happy to eat that cake with my students. They were very proud of themselves.
