What can the fire be caused with?
The fire can be caused with matches, iron, cigarettes, lightning.
Let’s speak about lightning. We’ll do many interesting exercises to learn more how to protect
yourself. What do you know about the thunderstorm?
Let’s read the text. Before reading pay attention to pronunciation and meaning of some new
words ( thunder, lightning, occur, spark)
Thunderstorms
Do you know what thunder and lightning are? Lightning is a big spark of electricity
that travels from the sky down to the earth. Thunder is the big noise you hear after you see
lightning in the sky. Thunder and lightning occur during a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms
occur the most often during the spring and summer.
Have you ever heard the expression, “Lightning never strikes the same place twice?”
Well, it’s not exactly true. A man named Roy Sullivan was struck by lightning seven times in
25 years. Many people die the first time they are struck by lightning. More than 200 people
are killed by lightning in the United States every year.
Is the text clear?
1. Say whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).
- Lightning travels from the earth to the sky.
- Roy Sullivan was struck by lightning 10 times in 25 years.
- Lightning never strikes the same place twice.
- Thunderstorms occur during every season.
-You hear thunder before lightning.
- It’s not dangerous to swim during thunderstorms.
2. Match the words in Column A with the words or phrases in Column B that best describe
them.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM LIGHTNING?
1.
Go inside a house, a building, or a car.
2.
Never stand under a tree, especially if it is standing alone in an open place. Tall things
attract lightning.
3.
Never swim or stay in a boat during a thunderstorm. Lightning travels easily through
water and can find you!
4.
Stay off metal things, such as bicycles and motorcycles, because they also attract
lightning.
5.
Stay in a low spot if you don’t have time to get to a safe place.
Every nation has proverbs which we should remember to be healthy and safe. I’ll give
you some English proverbs and you try to find Russian equivalent
One cannot be too careful. ( Бережёного бог бережёт)
All is well that ends well. (Всё хорошо, что хорошо кончается)
Caution is the parent of safety. ( Бдительность – мать безопасности)
Look before you leap. (Не зная броду, не суйся в воду)
Discretion is the better part of valour. (Осторожность – лучшая часть доблести.)
I think that our lesson was interesting for you. You have learned many useful facts which
help you to be safe.
