HOLIDAYS AND

TRADITIONS IN RUSSIA

AND THE UK

MASLENITSA IN RUSSIA

Maslenitsa

is

a

jolly

and

beautiful Russian holiday.

This

celebration

lasts

for

a

week. This is the last week

before

Great

Lent.

People

cook pancakes served

with

honey,

caviar,

fresh

cream and butter.

This is a very happy week.

Every day there is a special

activity. For example, on

Tuesday different games are

held in the open air.

On Sunday a straw effigy

symbolizing winter is

burnt and people have to

ask for forgiveness from

all their close relatives

and friends

PANCAKE DAY IN THE UK

People race with a frying pan in one hand.

They have to "toss" the pancake, throw it in

the air and catch it again in the frying pan .

In Britain Pancake Day is more generally

connected with relics of the traditional feasting

before the fast. British people eat pancakes on

Pancake Day in February or March. In some

parts of Britain there are pancake races on

Pancake Day.

EASTER IN RUSSIA

Easter is the main Orthodox

festival observed in spring. People

colour eggs, enjoy traditional

Rusian dishes, churches hold

special services on this day.

The main

meals are

ritual ones:

Easter cakes,

kulich and

painted eggs.

EASTER IN THE UK

A very well-known symbol of

Easter is the Easter Bunny or

Easter Rabbit.

Egg is a sign of hope, life. True

Easter eggs are hard-boiled,

dyed in bright colours, and

sometimes well decorated.

Nowadays Easter eggs are

usually made of chocolate,

marzipan or sugar.

NEW YEAR’S DAY IN

RUSSIA

Grandfather

Frost is

believed to

come at night

and give

presents to

children.

The delightful New Year tree is decorated for

this day and joyful parties are held all over the

country.

NEW YEAR’S DAY IN THE UK

In Britain, this day was officially declared as

New Year’s Day in 1752.

A very old custom of “first footing” is still

followed in Britain. “First foot” is the first

person to cross the threshold of a home on

New Year’s Day and a bringer of good fortune

for the coming year.

CHRISTMAS IN RUSSIA

In Russia Christmas is celebrated in a grand

fashion . People take part in all-night Mass in

Cathedrals. In Russia, many people don’t eat

meat, eggs or milk from a few weeks before

Christmas and it is customary to fast until after

the first church service on Christmas Eve.

CHRISTMAS IN THE UK

Christmas is celebrated all over the

world and no other holiday has

developed such a great number of

customs and symbols. The

Christmas story comes from the

Bible. For most British families, this

is the most important festival of

the year.

Найди отличия

To conclude, I want to say: It is

essential for a nation to stick to

its roots and to remember its

past. And if we want new

generations to know the history

and culture it is important to

start educating children in

families when they are young.
