Lesson Plan: Cultural exchange

This is mostly a speaking lesson. You’re going to discuss cultural

diversity and cultural identity, first, working as a whole class, then,

separated into the smaller groups. Each student will have an opportunity

to share their personal opinion as well. You’ll watch a short video about

cultural etiquette and possible misunderstandings related to it. You’ll

play “guess the country from the emoji” game or you’ll have a role-play

game “Ambassador tea party”

1)

Show the pictures of different cultures and ask students if they

know what are they. If they don’t, let them try to guess.

ANSWERS: 1. Russian Maslenitsa 2. Indian Mehindi 3. Spanish

Flamenco dance 4. British Fish&Chips 5. Chinese tea ceremony

What country are these cultures from? What continent each of them

represents? Have you ever travelled there/Would you like to visit

this country one day?

2)

Ask students what makes people all around the world different? A

place where they were born, a country they are living in and its history, a

culture they’ve been raised into, language they’re speaking, unique

personality and background: family and friends, hobbies, interests and

dreams. Elicit the meaning of the term “culture” as the way of life and

social organization of a particular country or group. Name the main

components: language, customs and beliefs, religion, art/music/drama,

food, behavior and attitudes.

3)

Make a list of Russian culture components together, then divide

your class into a few smaller groups and let them make their lists of

different countries: Korea/Japan, Italy/France, Brazil/Argentina. Kenya/

Australia (printed pictures should be prepared)

4)

Watch a short video about cultural misunderstanding (cross

cultural etiquette), ask students some questions: what country is it in the

video? Why do people at the dining table feel uncomfortable? Should a

person learn about traditions of the other country if they stay there?

5)

Why is it important to have a cultural exchange? What are the

ways to know more about different cultures nowadays?

Discuss the options: travelling/going on a vacation, studying/working

abroad, make foreign friends online, visit events with native speakers,

listen to foreign music/watch movies/series/youtube and tik-tok videos

from foreign creators, read books, follow people from different parts of

the word on social media.

6)

Play “guess the country from the emoji” or “Ambassador tea

party”
