My native town.
My native town is situated in the Kursk Region. It is an hour ride from Kursk. Some people
cannot imagine their lives without theatres, multistoried houses and broad avenues all that is
typical of every big industrial city. I like the place where I was born, my parents live here and I
have spent here almost my life. You may think that the life in provincial town is rather dull and
far from being interesting. Perhaps you are right. But I shall try to prove that this life has got
quite a lot of advantages .Every morning you get up and breathe in fresh air full of various
scents which depend on a season: in summer it is a smell of fresh grass and flowers, in winter it
is a smell of frost and snow which covers everything with its white thick duvet. My native town
becomes especially beautiful in early spring when there are many rose- shrubs in flower -beds
and everything is in blossom. This time I like to tramp down the streets lined with chestnuts,
mountain -ashes and limes Those who want to have some entertainment can go to the
Recreation Park that is famous for its carrousels and all sorts of side- shows. Those who prefer
dancing may go to a disco. It is rather popular with young people especially teenagers. It is a
pity we have no concert halls or theatres but you may go to the cinema and watch film there. We
have lot of opportunities to go in for sports because there are two big stadiums in the town.
I quite forgot to tell you that there are some good cafes in my town; you can call at any of
them. I am sure you will like it there if you want to have some ice –cream or coffees have a talk
with your friends. I like my native town very much. I want it always to be beautiful and clean.

A.S. Popov- inventor of the radio.
The wireless receiving set or radio is one of the greatest achievements of human genius. Priority
in the invention of radio belongs to the Russian scientist Popov. On the 7
th
of May we celebrate
Radio Day because on that day in 1895 the Russian scientist Alexander Popov demonstrated his
first radio to a meeting of the Russian Physical and Chemical Society.
A.S. Popov was born in the Urals. While at school he spent all his free time on physics and
mathematics. He studied at St Petersburg University and graduated from it with honours, but was
not satisfied with the conditions of the laboratories of the University and accepted the post of the
teacher in the Mining School in Kronstadt. There he began his research in electrical engineering.
The greater part of his life he devoted to the problem of the application of the electromagnetic
waves to wireless communication.
Popov worked on a sensitive receiving set which could pick up even the weakest radio waves.
The year of 1895 is considered to be the date of the invention of the radio when Popov
demonstrated his radio receiving set in operation. By the end of the year he improved his
apparatus. It was the first radio receiving set in the world.
Since then the art of radio communication has progressed a great deal. Many scientists and
inventors made their contributions.
The radio has brought great changes to our life, At present our country produces equipment for
powerful broadcasting and television centres, and for radio-relay stations, electronic computers,
radar stations, telecontrol and telemetric systems and other purposes.

Institute and two years later professor of the Petersburg University where he carried on his
scientific and pedagogical activities for twenty-three years. In 1893 Mendeleyev was appointed
Director of the Bureau of Weights and Measures. At the same time he carried on a great deal of
scientific and literary work. In 1906 he issued a book under the title Contribution to the
Knowledge of Russia which contained profound thoughts as to the trends for the further
development of Russian industry and the Russian national economy. The greatest result of
Mendeleyev’s creative effort was the discovery of the Periodic Law and the drawing up of the
Periodic Table of Elements.
One of Mendeleyev’s prominent works is his book Principles of Chemistry in which inorganic
chemistry was for the first time explained from the standpoint of the Periodic Law.
Of other works by Mendeleyev, the most important are: On the Combination of Alcohol with
Water and Investigations of Aquaeous Solutions by their Specific Gravity. His works embrace
various fields of science- chemistry, physics, physical chemistry, geophysics.
A great scientist Mendeleyev was a good citizen and patriot as well, who devoted his life and
energies to the progress of his country’s science and industry.

M. Lomonosov.
The Russian scientist Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov was born in1711, in the village of
Denisovka near the town of Kholmogory, Archangelsk Gubernia, to the family of a fisherman.
Taught to read and write by literate fellow-villager, Lomonosov had soon read all the books he
could obtain in this village. At the age of 17 he left his native village, and made his way to
Moscow. In Moscow he succeeded to enter the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy, the only higher
educational institution in Moscow at that time.
Neither the conditions of work nor material difficulties discouraged young Lomonosov. His
brilliant capabilities and hard work enabled him to complete the seven-grade curriculum of the
Academy in four years. Lomonosov did not finish the last grade, as he was transferred together
with eleven others of the best pupils to Petersburg to study at the University of the Academy of
Sciences.
Less than a year after he came to Petersburg Lomonosov was sent abroad to study metallurgy
and mining.
In1741, after his return to Russia Lomonosov was appointed Adjunct of the Academy in the
class of physics and soon became a professor in chemistry and a full member of the Russian
Academy of Science.
His tireless scientific and practical activities were striking for their breadth and diversity.” Only
now, after two centuries have passed, can we grasp in full and appreciate all that was done by the
giant of science”, wrote S. Vavilov. ” His achievements in the spheres of physics, chemistry,
astronomy, instrument- making, geology, geography, linguistics and history would be worthy of
the activities of a whole academy.” No wonder Pushkin called Lomonosov “our first university.”
Lomonosov considered chemistry his main profession but he was at the same time outstanding
Russian physicist. He also emphasized the necessity of a close connection between chemistry
and physics. Explaining chemical phenomena through the laws of physics, Lomonosov founded
a new science, physical chemistry.
He gave all his energy to the promotion of Russian science. In1755 Moscow University was
founded thanks to the efforts and after the project of Lomonosov. This university became a
major centre of Russian enlightenment and science.
Lomonosov died in1765, at the age of 54.

Michael Faraday (1791-1867).
Michael Faraday is considered to be the father of the electric motor. He was born in a village
near London. His father was a blacksmith. Faraday’s family was very poor. And his father could
not even dream of an education for his son. Michael did not learn much as he had to support his
family and at the age of thirteen he began to work in a bookbinder’s shop. From the very
moment he was among books. He became interested in science. Sometimes he took home the
books he was interested in. And once he read an article on electricity. Since that time his interest
was in electricity and chemistry.
One day a man on entering the shop found the boy at work binding an encyclopedia, and at the
same time studying hard the article in it on electricity. The man was surprised to see a boy so
interested in a subject of such difficulty and questioned him. He found out that Faraday, working
late at night, had already been making experiments of his own, though he was too poor to
possess anything but a homemade battery! The visitor was surprised and gave him four tickets
for the lectures which Sir Humphry Davy was then delivering at the Royal Institution. The boy
was so much delighted as if someone had given him a fortune. He went to the lectures and made
notes of what he heard. At the end of the lecture he came up to the great scientist and showed
him his notes.Davy was surprised. Then he remembered how poor he himself had been and how
he had to struggle to educate himself.
Faraday told him that he wanted to become a scientist. Later Davy made Faraday his assistant
and valet, he helped Faraday in his education and took him to the Continent. Thus began his
scientific career.
Faraday had made notable discoveries to his credit. Among his most important works are the
concept of the magnetic field and magnetic “lines of force”, production of new kinds of optical
glass, in electricity- researches on electrolysis and the discovery of the rotation plane of
polarized light in a magnetic field. Electricity and magnetism were joined firmly together as a
single field of study - electromagnetism.
It was Michael Faraday, who produced the first mechanical motion by means of a permanent
magnet and an electric current. It was he who discovered that when a wire carrying a current is
placed in the field of a magnet, a mechanical force is exerted on the wire. This is the principle
upon which the modern electric motor is based. Like real great scientist Faraday loved his work
more than honours, he refused the presidency of both the Royal Institution and the Royal Society
of London and also refused to be knighted. During his life Faraday made more than two
thousand experiments.

Ernest Rutherford.
Ernest Rutherford was born on August 30, 1871, in New Zealand, in the family of the English
settlers.
In1861gold was found in New Zealand and many foreigners came to live there. Industry began
to increase its export.
Ernest’s father earned his living by bridge- building and other construction work required in the
country at that period. At the same time he carried on small-scale farming.
Little Ernest was the fourth child in the family. When the boy was five he was sent to primary
school. After finishing primary school he went to the secondary school. He liked to read at
school very much. His favourite writer was Charles Dickens. He also liked to make models of
different machines. He was particularly interested in watches and cameras, he even constructed
camera himself.
At school he was good at physics, mathematics, English, French and Latin. He paid much
attention to chemistry too. At the age of 19 he finished school and entered the New Zealand
University.
At the University Ernest Rutherford was one of the most talented students. He worked hard and
took an active part in the work of the Scientific Society of the University. But he was also fond
of sports and took part in the student’s sport competitions. At one of the meetings of the
Scientific Society he made his scientific report ”The Evolution of Elements”. For his talented
scientific research he got a prize. After graduation Rutherford went to Cambridge where he
continued his investigations (исследования).
Some years later Rutherford moved to Canada to continue his research work at the University of
Montreal. Besides his successful researches he also lectured at the leading Universities of the
United States and England.
Rutherford’s famous work” The Scattering(распространение)of Alpha and Beta Particles of
Matter and the Structure of the Atom” proved that the atom could be bombarded so that the
electrons could be thrown off, and the nucleus(ядро)itself could be broken. In the process of
splitting the nucleus, matter was converted into energy, which for the scientists of the 19
th
century seemed unbelievable. The splitting of the atom has opened to a man a new and enormous
source of energy. The most important results have been obtained by splitting the atom of
uranium. Ernest Rutherford paid much attention to his young pupils. After 1920 he did not make
great discoveries in science, but taught young scientists who worked in the field of atomic
research work. Among his favourite pupils was Pyotr Kapitsa, a famous Soviet physicist.
Ernest Rutherford died in the autumn of 1937 at the age of 66, and was buried at Westminster
Abbey not far from the graves of Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Michael Faraday.
